As a professional branding headshot photographer I am often asked "what should I wear for my headshot portrait?"
I always say, wear an outfit that you would wear for a job interview or to see your best client. Stylish and simple, professional but still show your personality. Some other other things you might want to consider:
- Choose your outfit well in advance of when you need to take your photo.
- Make sure your outfit is clean and well pressed when you’re taking pictures.
- Solid, muted colors often look best in portraits, a pop of color is OK, but keep it classic. patterns sometimes take the eye away from the face.
- Choose colors that compliment both your complexion and the branding colors on your website, social media and/or advertising material.
- Don’t ignore the bottoms. A headshot isn’t always just head and shoulders.
- Do you have a visually recognizable brand logo? Try incorporating it in your headshot, some companies even require it.
- It tends to look more professional to wear sleeves.
- A blazer often conveys confidence and professionalism.
- Large accessories can often take attention away from your face.
- Have a trusted friend offer their opinion when making selections.
- When you’re taking photos have a couple of choices with you, that way if something isn’t conveying your brand message, it can be changed.
